What’s new in the Google Search “Pigeon” update? (February 2015)
UPDATED AUGUST 2019 – YOU CAN ALSO CHECK HERE FOR GOOGLE’S UPDATES (I KNOW THAT’S WHAT I DO!)
Title tags should be 55 characters now – Else you’ll fall off the end…
Google Places (mapping system) has changed to Google My Business (2019).
Guest blog posts… Are not good for building links to your website anymore. Please don’t do this. See my other post on why this is pants in this day and age!
Duplicate content is still a big no, no. If you are going to use something else then please site the original article and link to this. You need to change by 75% to avoid getting penalised for duplicate content, so it makes sense to start from scratch anyway.
Anchor links (internal and on page website content) should not use so many keywords (don’t spam here for SEO). Use business name and click here only. Great news for the rise in 1 page websites also.
Manual penalties, are link sources coming from the wrong kind of website e.g directories. Mainly true from older websites. Just make sure that who you are linking to looks credible.
The type of link building links to avoid
- Free directories
- Wikipedia (it’s no follow so no link juice so no point)
- Websites on the same server (hosting as you)
- Blog comments / Forum posts
- Paid link networks / Link exchange networks – Business networking groups are kind of OK but the sites don’t get much traffic anyway.
- Guest blog posting (as above)
- Try and get links coming into your website also. This is better.
What works now in terms of Content Marketing?
Ideas and innovative blog posts (these are actual posts ON your website) that people then link to (like this one). So I might build up a blog post of referred information (VIP and written by me), create an infographic, describe a how to, research and cite this, case studies (are separate but still important) and briefs. Like PR but with different content each time.
SEO Focus 2015 (2019)
Regular, quality fresh content on your site – must be unique and well written if text.
Add alt text to images and make sure that this is useful.
Build your social media networks – your distribution channel for content. Try and get traffic coming into your site from social. Make sure that bios are filled out correctly.
Google My Business (2019)
Local businesses are coming up in search results – Even if you search nationally.
Change of content will prompt search spiders and robots to come back and take another look – Dynamic content such as blog posts are key to this. Register this for your business as soon as your website is live. Postcard verification works the best.
So what else do we need to know?
Add more (blog post) content, don’t just change punctuation (yes I have a client who asked me to do that once!).
Check that your website hosting is on a decent speed and PHP setting. I can help you with that here.
Google crawl “budget”: You can resubmit your website to Google after making recent changes and if you feel that a new sitemap isn’t working. Find out more from Google and get it working here.
The Page Title (tag – Meta) IS KEY. You can check up on this more in Yoast SEO, which is a Plugin to make your website fly! (No a sales link!).
Meta keywords aren’t used and never will be – Write your keywords up in the Meta Description – You can also match this with the key search term (key phrase) that you want to be searched for in Yoast SEO as I’ve mentioned about (this plugin) above.
Header tags still relevant – These need to be done and can be actioned in your own website by YOU! Start with H1 and then work down to H3. Use relevant key terms in these which Google will pick up on firstly.
Links really are key. Build these outside of business and then show on your site – Google will see that you are a genuine biz and like you more!
